Picking up my first DVD burner, a Nu DDW-082...

Going to be picking up one of these babies from Newegg this weekend, and I'm not quite sure which media to use. I hear the DDW-082 can burn a lot of 4X media @ 8X...but I'm not totally sure which media is best.

Right now I'm leaning toward the Ritek 4X +R stuff...anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks, I've already checked out the NEC, and this may sound silly, but the faceplate design turned me off, so I'm going with the Nu-Tech model.

When dual layer has been out for awhile, and the media is affordable, I'll get a dual layer then.

Yes that does sound silly. My case has a door so I don't see the drives til I open it.

That's cool for you, but I don't. I have a silver clearcoated aluminum case with a 1/2 in. thick acryllic front that I spent good money on, and I am painting the faceplate of the drive to match...

So, in my case, it matters. Just because something isn't important to you, doesn't mean it's not important to other people.

800A is a +R drive..which has some features I like..book-type(not extremely unique), QVideo(haven't used) and walking OPC......forum.. I like RicohJPNR01 for 8x burning..but the fresh stock Memorex +R at BB/Staples(CMC) does well booktyped @ 4x in a NEC1100 played back on a 4 yr old GE settop player(yeah ..its old and playing DVD +R ) ..as always..ymmv..

Never buy Memorex, it is HORRIBLE media, 50% of my memorex discs usually have some kind of error, they still play ok usually if it's video, but there are errors. If going retail buy TDK, otherwise buy Ritek (-R). I buy Prodisc myself, because I buy printable media, and they seem to be the best printable. You can get Ritek from Newegg, I buy my Prodisc media at rima.com

Did you look at the Lite-On LDW-851S? NewEgg has them for $79.99 right now. I got one yesterday from BestBuy ($109) and it is really a nice burner. I plan to make a lot of money with it backing up peoples' home movies to DVDs. I have some potential customers already lined up.

like dulanic said, avoid memorex media. i second his recommendation on tdk - burned about 50 tdk 4x dvds (usually at 8x), and only one coaster so far, which was my fault!

I'm a little confused about one point you made regarding the Ritek. You suggest I get the -R stuff...but from the reviews of the the Nu-Tech I've seen, it only burns 4X @ 8X with the +R stuff. If I go retail, I'm torn between the Fuji's and the Verbatim DataLifePlus, which I've read are very good things about. The Verabtims with the Super AZO layer are supposed to be excellent media, and I'm wondering if all Fuji stuff is still Taiyo Yuden.

The other choice is the 50 pack of Ritek 4X +R's @ Newegg, which seem to be the popular G04 or something discs...the ones with the red shrink wrap.

Can you burn 4X @ 8X with the -R stuff? If I go with the retails, I might just go with the Verbatims since it's only a $1 more for their 10 pack of 8X media with jewel cases than it is for their 4X media.

Yeah, but I consitently heard they tend to be cheaply built and die early. Having been using Lite-On CDRW's for years, and having several just stop working in under a year of use, I'm going to avoid Lite-On for my DVD burner.

It also seems like the Nu-Tech has excellent firmware support, which is one advantage Lite-On has always had, so it should be ok. I'm basically getting this drive for free anyhow since I'm selling off an old system for a $100...

Yeah, I was going to anyway. As long as I have been buying blank CD media, Memorex has always been consistenly crap, so I figured their DVD media would carry on this fine tradition.

I have 2 100pk spindles of Memorex(Made in Japan..TaiyoYuden atip)..have not a worry about what Dulanic says as he hasn't even listed his burner..Memorex..like every branded media..buys from whomever..I have encountered Fuji cdrs(TY and CMC),Fuji+R(RicohJPNR01 ), Memorex cdrs(TY,Prodisc,CMC), Memorex +R(CMC and RicohJPNR01), Sony cdrs(CMC), Sony +R(so far only RicohJPNR01), Imation cdrs(CMC and Prodisc), Imation +R(CMC and RicohJPNR01)TDK cdrs(actual USA Georgia and CMC), TDK-R(
TDKG02), TDK+R(CMC),etc. .,..out of my 791+ +R burns only have about 10 to 15 dead/coasters..some due to crappy media(uneven dye distribution.)..some due to errors with files(usually bad files/source to begin with) and a few due to system limits/user error. I was really surprised tho by the old NEC1100 tho with that CMC ..it is always...ymmv..

I've burned over 400 Memorex 4X +R discs (about 1/2 RicohJPNR01 and 1/2 CMC) at 8x with my Benq 800A and only burned 2-3 coasters. I'm currently using 50 pk Ritek 4x +R at 8X and I find no problem with these also.

Hmm, I guess I've just had good luck with them. My wife's computer sports my old 12X Lite-On CD burner, she uses it all the time to make compilation CDs and the drive never makes a coaster. It's now 4 years old...

I hope to have the same experience with my new Lite-On DVD burner of course.

Ok, thanks for the help guys. I just placed my order for the Nu-Tech burner, 50 pack spindle of the Ritek 4X +R's, and a 50 pack of slim jewel cases. I figure worst case scenario, I will just have to burn @ 4X. Thanks for all the help...

Oh, and one more thing, it seems trying to get a specific media is almost impossible. Is it just luck of the draw or what? Oh, and ScrapSilicon, I apologize for my mistake about Memorex, but in the past everything I've ever used made by memorex were junk...their optical drives (before DVD-R's were out) and their CD-R/CD-RW media, but it sounds like this has changed if they are selling TY media now.

It sounds like I really need to start doing some heavy duty research...this DVD burning can be a bit confusing with all the formats and varying media. I am just making the plunge now since I was going to pick up a plain old CDRW for my backup system, but I came into some $$$ selling an old crappy syste, (P2-400), so it's not going to cost me anything basically to get this stuff. I'm mainly going to just be doing backups first, but I may want to make my own DVD movie backups down the line...anyone have some good links to read up on this. Is Doom9 still the place to check out?

for backing up dvds i'd recommend an app called dvd xcopy xpress made by 321 studios. it basically lets you copy all of a dvd (including subtitles, dubbed languages and menus) with two mouse clicks. you can't buy it retail anymore, but people still sell it on ebay. have fun!
