Give us some info on your interests/how well you're doing in school and maybe we can make some suggestions...

ask as many people as you can where they are going to apply. ask them why they made those choices. You will likely hear a lot of talk about colleges next year, you won't be able to escape it.

Check out Princeton Review Online (no affiliation with Princeton University) for information about specific colleges.

If you don't mind spending some money, look into buying The Fiske Guide to Colleges. I used it and found that it was immensely useful for getting a general feel for what the colleges are like.

Don't fret now. You are a junior. Just concentrate on the SAT's and keeping your GPA at a good level. During teh summer, start thinking about where you want to go. visit some schools and when your senior year starts, start crossing colleges off your list and pick some schools.

I agree with Datafly...check out princeton review. Not only do they have the educational requirements, courses offered and ranking, but it also provides information on social life, campus events and student outlook.

Choosing a college that is right for you depends on what you want out of the experience. Are you looking for a challenge? Do you want to go somewhere with prestige? What are you interested in? Different schools have stronger programs depending on the area and field of interest. Are you going for sports or politics or perhaps just to meet new people so you can begin developing a network of peers. Picking the right school is all up to you.

It also depends how competitive you want it to be. Places like UCLA, standford, Cal, ect are big tough schools with intense student compeitition. It's up to you to get things done, go to the professors office hours and work like mad to be at the top end of the grading curve. Going to smaller school like UCR or Saint Mary's college provides a good education with more focus on students since it is smaller in size. Less competition and more resources for students is a plus.

An old chinese saying, "do you want to be a big fish in a small pond or a small fish in a big pond?"
