picking primary monitor

I have a macbook pro and I installed windows xp sp2. I have an external monitor and I want to make that my primary monitor but the option is grayed out in the display properties screen. For what it's worth, I am able to switch it using the ati software under advanced, but it forces both resolutions to be the same, which isn't desirable because my monitor has a much higher native resolution. Thanks for your help!

EDIT: I have an x1600 ati video card in the laptop.
