Picking out a new router

I have done a little bit of reading on the forums here as to what the majority of you think is the best router for the price. It seems a lot of you recommend the Buffalo brand router with mimo, From my understanding you need a Mimo wireless adapter card to see any real benefit from a Mimo router, also I was wondering why everyone recommends the Buffalo Mimo router. On Toms Hardware, there reviews show that the Zyxel and DLink Mimo routers are much faster because they are based on a different platform.

I currently have a Linksys WRT54G v.3. however I need a new router, I was also wondering why everyone recommends switching to the dd-wrt firmware. Is there any real performance upgrade as in speed of wired or wireless routing? From what I have seen everyone says to get it because it has a few extra features that I don't use or need and has a cleaner interface then the standard Linksys config page.
