I'm sorry, but there's only general correlation between price and quality of wine. If you're not willing to read up a bit, you're SOL. There are a LOT of really good wines out there under $15 US, but there's a lot of crap as well. If you don't research, you're basically throwing darts.

Luckily I have a dad who have been interested in wine for 35 year and have an extra Hobby job at a wine store, where he gets 25% off.
When I go to a supermarket I just go trial and error, but for special occasions I ask my father, or ask in a wine shop. Wine shops live on selling good wine so they need to know what to sell. If you can't tell the difference there's no reason to buy expensive wine.
