Picking a new cell phone

Okay, my two year Verizon contract is about to expire, so I am going to get another phone along with another contract.

I want something fairly top of the line (since I'll probably have it for another two years), but I don't need a ton of crazy features. Cost is not really an issue. Durability is, and I don't need something super-small (though it would be nice), but I don't want something huge either.

Things that I absolutely need:
- Bluetooth headset capability
- speakerphone
- camera...prefer at least 1MP, I don't need much capability though, I have a real camera for that
- screen on the outside (does not have to be color)
- nice LOUD ringer

Things I would like:
- a memory card slot would be nice
- music, but only if it has a memory card slot and doesn't require me to sign up for VCast.

I will also be on Verizon, so whatever phone you mention has to be available through them. Yes, I already know about the Bluetooth thing, it's not a big deal to me.

Anyway...I am looking at two phones right now that seem to have those features:

The RAZR V3m seems to be popular, and it's thinner than my current phone (Samsung a670), but it's very wide and tall, not a whole lot smaller than my current phone. I like how it's thin, but I'm also afraid I'd break it since it's so small, and I'd like to hear input from others who have had it.

I also found a phone I'd never heard of called the Samsung a930. It looks really cool and it's about the size of my phone right now, which has always been comfortable. I kind of like how the outside screen is monochrome, since it stays lit up all the time. I have a color screen on the outside right now and it's nice that it shows pictures when people call, but I can never see the screen unless I'm receiving a call. The swivel camera also seems cool.

On the other hand though, I'm not sure how I'd like those buttons on the outside (what if I press them by mistake?), and it's also a thicker and more expensive phone.

Any suggestions or comments are appreciated!

I have the V3C and love it. The a930 is a sweet looking phone as well. I know they disabled bluetooth on the latest firmware for the V3C, not sure bout the V3M.

Disabled Bluetooth as in the profiles that'll let you link up to the computer, or disabled it completely?

The only thing I need Bluetooth for is a headset. Don't really need any other Bluetooth functionality.

RAZR menus are SLOW! At least the RAZRs my friend's have. It's like trogging through Windows XP with a 8086. I have a LG VX8100 and like it quite a bit. Menus are as fast as I can push the keys (RAZR has a long lag time), camera is very clear (1.3MP), has a miniSD slot, and BT is great. I use a Motorola HS850 and the features and clarity are incredible.

Thats true. I have mine flashed to Altell however so its fast. I do like the A930 and may buy one and sell my Razr however anyhow.

Gnrslash4life: Explain what you mean about "flashing yours to Alltel"? I know a lot of people complain about the Verizon UI (which is present on both phones), does that have anything to do with it?

You can flash the firmware on the phone to the Alltel firmware which is the Motorola gui. It works with Verizon, you will need to do seem edits for stuff like Get it Now and Vcast but if you dont use them (i dont) then you really dont need to seem edit anything. If you would get a Razr i could help you with flashing the phone and all that hoopla.

Stick with Samsung...the menus and UI will make a lot more sense and I hear the 930 is a very good phone for what matters most--PHONE CALLS!!!

Ive been wondering myself how the call quality is on that phone. The Razr is excellent and blows the A670 away.

Yeah, my A670 is definitely over 2 years old, so I would expect any phone today to blow it away 😛

Thanks Gnr! I will let you know if I go for the RAZR and need any help.

BigJ, I have heard a little about it; most of what I've heard is that it's got the Motorola UI and it seems to have a lot of the features the RAZR has; just not as thin. I'm going to look into it though. I am going to the VZW store on my next day off and see just how bad the Verizon UI really is 😛

I cant speak for the A930 but I can again speak for the A950 that it's a very rare day for me to drop a call. I can literally be about 50 feet underground(at underground parking structure at work) and manage a bar or two. Call reception is always crystal clear for me and the only place I havent been able to get a consistent signal is....well actually nowhere yet and I travel all over michigan.

Samsung makes a nice phone.

Its not terrible terrible but its slow. Its because the Verizon UI runs over top of the Motorola. So the phone is technically processing 2.

Thanks guys 🙂

Bumping for more opinions. I am going to the Verizon store later today to take a look at the e815 and the Samsung a930 and the RAZR V3m. Leaning towards the a930, but all suggestions appreciated.

i just got the a930 about 2 weeks ago... upgraded from the a670... it's about the same size, a little bigger... i had thought that i might be able to use my old car charger, but no.

it's pretty good as far as i'm concerened. bluetooth works very well w/a heaset - i'm using a moto hs820 (relatively cheap).

haven't been able to figure out this 'mp3 player' as it's not reading my files well, but that's okay.

all in all, it does everything that i need which is a make/recieve calls - the primary use of a phone.
everything else is like a luxury, the camera isn't bad either.

let me know if you have any other questions... i just didn't want to have the razr like everyone else =P
