Out of 100 people that like to drink, you could probably "sort them" according to their particular poison of choice.

All alcohols "do the same thing" yet they do it very differently.

For example, Tequilla is the only thing I honestly cannot drink b/c it makes me stupid. The only times I've ever gotten truly angry while drinking have been when drinking Tequilla.

OTOH, I could drink Bourbon all night and be a happy, smiley, goofy drunkard.

Other folks have opposite effects.

So, what makes a particular alcohol have the effect it does on an individual? Genetics? Chemical makeup? Solar winds? What?

I'm not entirely sure that different alcohol's can cause different behaviors, but if they can, I assume it'd be some complex neurochemical interaction behind it.

Wine gives me a buzz after one glass. Beer doesn't affect me up at all, but it makes me full - so I don't drink it anymore. So all I drink nowadays is liquors.

Nooooo. Wrong answer. You lose. Don't pass go, give everyone that replies in this thread $200. You are the weakest link. And you've been booted off the island. Twice. Set adrift in a boat. With holes in it. :p

no kidding. im 28, and i dont drink because my friends tell me its the cool thing to do.

to answer the op's ?, i think its just a matter of personal preference. i used to only drink captain and hated beer. then i started drinking beer, but only girly beers. now id rather have a good red or darker beer. and i love vodka and brandy.

lot of times it also depends on what im eating.

The non-alcohol ingredients that included along with the drink make a big difference.

Guiness is my choice usually and I am Indian. I stay away from the hard stuff but Rum'n Coke is unofficially India's national drink.

Beer, the cheap stuff. But not from the tap. Beer on tap gives me hangovers, bottled/canned doesn't, go figure.

It's just personal taste.

I'm sure genetics have something to do with it on a very broad level, but I doubt there's any more behind the types of alcohol people drink than the types of food people eat.

Just social conditioning/personal taste.

I drink primarily drink lager. Canadian east coast or microbrewery premium, or European imported premium. Too many labels to name.

I also love gin and vodka. I've currently got a bottle of Bombay Sapphire and Level on the go.

How does level compare to grey goose and ketel one? I'm curious but think absolute is crap.

I kinda liked it. Never gave me any problems, but then I never drank more than 6-8 in a sitting.

Red Dog is the greatest frosty brew this planet has ever seen! I have very fond memories (or lack thereof?) which started with good ole Red Dog.

Red Dog

One of the few beers you can still taste the yeast in....

That beer is kind of old school for me too, but the best "cheap" beer out there is miller highlife by far nowadays.

Beer only for me...I normally only like domestic beers like Bud and Busch and Coors but I dont mind trying out other beers from time to time.

Right now I am on a Heineken thing though..nothing is quite like a Heineken. Yum! :)

I'm going to say genetics + culture. My father's side is Ukranian, so there's vodka in my blood by birth. :p

Tequila and whiskey make me a Sick Drunk. Don't puke, just feel like I want to. Rum, long as I don't mix it I'm generally good, but it messes me up quicker than my preferred.

My poison of choice though, is of course, Vodka. I'll drink that all night long. :D

The worst hangovers I've ever had have come from wine and rum. Though, they were both in excess - 2 bottles of cheap white wine in a half hour and several months later over half a handle of rum in a night. I guess it didn't help that I was drinking the rum with coke and the carbonation in the coke will get you drunk faster.
I'm usually good to go on all types of beer, though not too dark, except Guinness, and I'm into decent vodkas and gins.
