Pick my next purchase AT

I've been back and forth for about a month now trying to pick out my next video card have gotten absolutely NOWHERE. What better way to choose, than to have AT do it for me?

Price range = $150-200
Chipset = don't care
Brand = don't care

I want the best bang for my buck AT. MIRs are completely ok with me, as long as they make the card a killer deal 😉

Please and thank you.

Wait until next week. Once the new ATI cards are out, hopefully it gives prices for ALL cards a nudge to be lower.

For that budget, right now your best bet is a GTX470, 6870 (unless it's still inflated), 6850, 5850, or a GTX460 1gb.

What resolution do you game at?

Yeah, what resolution do you game at?

Right now, you can get a 5850 for $169.99 after MIR off newegg which is an incredible deal. Hard to beat at that price range, esp. since u can OC them like crazy

The HD 5850s and GTX 460s are going for good prices, with rebates. Either option is good.

There really isn't an absolute "best bang for the buck". Cheaper cards usually have the better bang for the buck, but they are slower. The closest card fitting that description is probably the GTX 460 SE, but it's a good bit slower than a regular 460 and the 5850.

GTX460 will rock your socks then, but if rebate is an option, that HD5830 is HAWT. I might grab one myself.

5830 is a complete turd. 5870 power usage but barely outperforms 5770. gtx 460 768 is faster by quite a bit, and it oc's much better as well.

@OP: since you have some time keep your eyes peeled for deals. the 5850 deal looks pretty good, but honestly you should be able to get gtx 460 - 768 for $110-115 some time over the next couple of months. I use one of those for 1680x1050 and it's great, and by the time you need more than 768mb ram you'll want to upgrade anyway.

oh, i meant HD5850, not 5830, my bad 🙂

It's not that bad, at the right price. Power usage is closer to the 5850 (here and here) than the 5870, and for the right price (relative to the 5770 and 5850) it can be a good card. It's more or less performance equals with the GTX 460 SE. Whichever one is faster depends on what the game in question favors.
