Pick my new laptop

In the market to buy a new laptop before college starts this fall. Wanted one to be able to casually play MMORPGs, RPGs. Doesn't have to give me 50+ FPS with eyecandy cranked up. It is going to be a desktop replacement so battery life is NOT important, neither is weight.
Here's the bad news: I have $1000 or less... Here is what I have been looking into:

Compaq R4000 (customized):
Athlon 64 3200+ 2.2ghz 512 cache
15.4 WXGA Widescreen (1280x800)
128 RAdeon Xpress 200m W/ 128 dedicated memory
60gb 5400 RPM HDD
8X DVD
1GB RAM
Integrated B/G wireless
12 cell battery

Since this is a portable desktop I would really like to stick with AMD, although I would consider P-M (NOT P 4). Who makes laptops with good Nvidia graphics? I wanted a 256mb Video Card. Can I find something comparable with better graphics?

thanx

Hmm, Radeon Xpress 200M is not a real good performer. A serious gamer would require Nvidia's Go 6800 chipset.

$1000 doesn't buy a decent gaming laptop.

Ditto for Pabster, 1000 dollars is not going to get you much in terms of gaming. The compaq r4000 is a good choice though for a budget if you can get all that for the price you want. I do hope you are referring to 8x DVD as at least a DVD/CD-RW

I would look for a used or refrbished emachines m6809 or similar. The m6809 typically comes with a A64 3000, and a Radeon Mobility 9600 64MB.

64MB may not sound like much, but that card with dedicated memory will likely at least double the performance of the Radeon IGP, and will be more than sufficient to run a lot of games like you're wanting to play. You can also find one under 1000 pretty easily.

Why not just go with a desktop?... Laptop's aren't really designed for gaming. The small monitor and small keyboard, along with the lack of a mouse, just dont make for a good gaming machine. Also, you're paying alot more for a laptop when compared to a desktop, and if they break you cant really fix them yourself.

Also, for laptop's, intel is the way to go. I mean, I love my Athlon64, but Centrino technology pisses all over anything AMD has.

Look around on the forums, you can find a Dell 9100 for around 1k. Actually, there's a Dell 9300 w/a 6800 going for $1150 right now.

Dell 9300

Dell 9100

Both at the same price, both great deals 😀
