pick me out some good PS2 games

I have finally decided to jump on my urge to get a next-generation console. I decided on the used ps2 deal from ebgames.com for $212. What are some good games to pickup? I have already decided on GT3, Burnout, and SSX Tricky. I like racing games and any other fun games. I am planning on renting GTA3 (I get one rental free from blockbuster since I am just purchased a console). Are there any other must-haves that I should pick up? I got the impression from reading on IGN boards that buying memory cards other than Sonys are a bad idea. This true? What about 3rd party game pads? I want another cheap pad. Any suggestions?

GTA3 is a must-buy - renting it won't do it justice. 3rd party pads aren't too bad - my cousin got one from Interact and I like it better than Sony's - it's bigger and feels better.

If you're into any sports you really can't go wrong with the EA Sports 2K2 titles. Also Metal Gear Solid 2 is a good buy.

Aren't 2K2 sports games from Sega?

I have most of every sport game for my Dreamcast, so I don't think I need it for the PS2. I am in no way retiring my DC, just getting a PS2 to compliment it. I am really into racing games. Any suggestions for a steering wheel?

Tokyo Extreme Racing, I saw it for $20 somewhere. Its a decent game you drive around highways and challenge people to race and with the profits you can rice out your ride.

Logitech makes a good wheel.

Is it alot different than the TokoyoExtreme 2 racing on the Dreamcast? I loved that game, but it got a little old.

I've also heard Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance was a good buy. Many people have said the game is short but replay value is there and from all accounts I've heard it's fun as hell.

I would have had a chance to get a first hand account of the game, but I rented it and the as$hole that had it before me thought it would be funny to stick a friggin' sticker on the silver platter side and tear it off, leaving scratches and gunk all over the bottom.

Other than that,
definitely buy GTA3, that game is insanely fun. It's one of those games you can always go back to and mess around it, it's too much fun.
Bought Metal Gear Solid 2 also. Good game if you like sneaking around.
Other than that, can't go wrong with Final Fantasy X.

I just bought the system myself though, so I'm still learning what games are good for it.

I'd suggest:

1) Just get one Sony mem card for now. If you fill it (I have yet to) then get another.

2) Ask to try out 3rd party controllers and only buy if you like them. Remember that the $15 you might save isn't worth it if noone wants to play using the cheap controller.

3) Games...

General:
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Final Fantasy X
Devil May Cry
Soul Reaver 2

Car/Racing:
Gran Tourismo 3 A-Spec
Grand Theft Auto III
ATV Offroad Fury
Smuggler's Run (1 or 2)
Midnight Street Racing (if you can find a cheap copy)

Other:

Frequency (music game)
Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies
Red Faction (excellent FPS)

Plus:

Sports Titles (EA makes lots!)

How does Pro Evolution Soccer compare to Fifa2k2?

Max Payne is fun, but rent it first.

I got SSX Tricky for xmas... it's awesome, so I would recommend that.

Of course all the other given's... MGS2, GTA3, GT3-Aspec, Devil May Cry was damn cool.
