Pick me a power supply

Senior member
im in the process of building a new computer for my brother. He is paying for all of the components and i am paying for the power supply. Now i dont want too much overkill because that would cost me too much money. I want to be able to supply a comfortable amount of power for the following system and thats it.

Evga 7900gt KO
X2 3800+
2GB Corsair Value RAM (PC4200)
17" Monitor

The rest of the stuff probably isnt important as it doesnt play a huge role in power consumption.

So i need good suggestions on a PSU to power those components with a small safety overhead. (I dont need his PSU going during finals week)

I thought Fortron was a well respected company?
The Enhance only has Output Voltage
3.3V -20a
5V - 14a
12V1 - 16a
12V2 -18a
-12V - 0.3a
5Vsb - 3.0a

Combined Load
130W

Where the Fortron has --+3.3V@30A, +5V@28A, +12V1@18A, +12V2@18A, -12V@0.5A, +5VSB@2A

The fortron appears to be marginally better than the Enhance.
The Enhance is a member of the 80+ club.

Where then Fortron people are satisfied with stating 70% ER....
I guess the Fortron people don`t want to pay to be told they have a good product. They probably already know they have a good product.

I'll get flamed from all the people who say a 300w Seasonic will power a quad SLI machine... but I'm recommending the 600w OCZ GameXStream.
A review I did is in my signature.

The part I high lighted is an outright lie and I think you know it Mr. 2posts. 😛

Do I smell spam?

Did you have some for breakfast.? It might be your breath blowing back in your face 😛

PSA: There are several other PSUs out there besides the AX Fortron at the bottom
and Seasonic near the top 😉

EDIT: I just read you're a hot-shot over at DFI-Street. That explains the OCZ rebranded PSU.
One MUST run OCZ to be a member of the club over there. The rep. from OCZ beats the drum
pretty hard over at The-Street. 😛 HA HA HA !

Everybody knows it's re-branded. The OCZ rep (he's actually an engineer) will even tell you that. I have no problems with Fortron except for the fact that the GX is cheaper and has better support (evidence is that an engineer takes to time to solve customers' problems). I've never had a problem with an OCZ product so why change? Also, as you know DFIs are picky with their power and memory -- so I think the main reason for all of the OCZ products being used on the Street are because other members have used them and had a plesureable experience. Everyone calls DFIs out for being hard to work with... but truth be told as long as you gather the right components most users never have problems.

Yes, I am an OCZ fanboy... but I rarely recommend their stuff unless someone is planning to buy a DFI.

And I may be 16 but I keep an open mind -- just because it comes out of your mouth does not mean it's always the right thing.
No need to flame other members because they don't necessarily share your same views.

Who accused me of spamming?? MMmmm! 😛
Computers do have uses beyond gaming...They really do!!

I know. I hardly ever game. In fact, my first time gaming in 4 months was last weekend.

I have a job in IS at a large (6600+ employees) medical center for the summer.

How so is what I said a lie?
A company sends there power supply to the people at 80+ who for a fee test the power supply and tell you what the efficiency rating is.
Please explain to me kind Sir which part of what I said is an outright lie.🙂
I know they donot test power supplies for free - do they?

Well, Mr. 3posts. In the context you said it, the implication is that 80 Plus is a fly by night scam organization, blowing smoke up our collective butts. This is not so.

Please go to thier site and read who & what they are. I'm sure Seasonic had to bribe 80Plus to give them a good rating. *shakes head*

OP, buy an Enhance and be happy.

no one cares how old you are, but the OCZ is a good choice for an sli system becasue it has the same quality as fortron and can acutally cost less! Amazing! The gamexstream is the exact same thing as the epsilon series made by fsp. I'm going with a 5140gh from enhance from my system but that might change if I get word that ocing a 3800+ X2 and an x1800xt will push that limit. Will it?

No - that is not what I said. You seem to think you are some sort of mind reader when that is far from the truth. I should not have to come forward and say what a fine objective the people at 80+ are undertaking.😀
The fact remains I was correct in what I said.🙂 I did not mis-represent what the poeple at 80+ do. Nor did I lie when I said companies pay them a fee to test there product. Did I?😉
I beleive you assume that just because somebody is a relative noob to these boards that somehow they are not aware of other web sites. 🙁
Yet - you in quoting or using 80+ failed to mention that submitting companies do pay a fee and that not all companies submit there products to the 80+ people for whatever reason.
What I believe needs to happen is you need to back off and admit you made a mistake in the way you read my post and in your proactive response.😀
http://www.80plus.org/ 80+ is a fine company. Those companies do not use 80+ as a tool to guage how efficient there power supply is, does not mean that those companies should be punished or ignored when it comes to choosing a power supply unit that will work in your computer.😀

I only told my age because generally people my age are rather close minded.

I don't mean to be a pain in the arse but that's a third tier review.

First tier means loading the PSU up to it's rated power (with crossload tests preferably), hold it there for 12 Hours or so with a realistic thermal source at the intake. Voltages measured with Oscilliscope or high grade Multimeter.

Second tier is where the load is pushed as high as possible (for example a high end computer with an additional 120W load chucked in) and voltages are measured with multimeter.

Third tier is a random computer and tested with motherboard monitor. Under circumstances where the PSU is not being taxed in any meaningful way.

or anyone building a new machine, this IS the PSU for you, no matter if it's a low end or high end build, it's got all of the bases covered.
Good effort on the write up, but this is not a review, it's a plug for a product you liked (and one that worked for you). The above quote is somewhere between wrong and utterly wrong. Don't take this as a personal attack, it's not meant to be, but i get rather annoyed by reviews/writeups that are sloppily written and that single quote managed to negate the good work you've done there.

Edited slightly.

@ Bobthelost... I can't get the quote (I'm at work) but at the very begining of the review I say something to the effect of "I used what resources were available". At the end I list 10 or so reviews from more thorough sites that do test the rails at load, etc. Look, I've only been into computers for a year so my hardware collection is still rather scarce (not near enough to load up this PSU). I know your intention wasn't to flame me, but just so you know.
