Piano players: Is this a good electric piano?

Triumph

Lifer
Korg SP100

I saw one of these at Guitar Center on sale for $399, I think marked down from $799. The model seems to be discontinued, and it had "used" marks (i.e. it wasn't broken anywhere, but it definitely wasn't brand new). I'm having a hard time finding any information about this on the net. I'm not very good, but all I need is piano sound, and weighted keys, either 76 or 88. I refuse to play on cheap Casio-esque non-weighted keys, and I don't need 100's of different sounds/samplings/recording features/etc etc. I won't use them. I figure I can plug this into my stereo for amplification. Opinions?

Korg, makes excellent electronic pianos and keyboards. As for that specific model I cannot give you any specific detail as I have not seen or had any experience with it.

A friend of mine has a Korg...not sure of the model but it has weighted keys and looks very similar to the one in the link. He paid about $900 so it may be the same model. He loves it and a neighbor of his, who used to once record for Sony Music, has played it and was quite impressed with it.

And...try this review on the SP100

I played on that keyboard a little bit while I was at Sam Ash looking for a new piano two months ago. I think it was decent. It was $799 when I was at Sam Ash.

I would recommend it for $399. That's a steal for a semi-decent feeling keyboard.

I settled on a Roland FP-3 (like $1300) based solely on feel. However, the Korg has a better feel than most of the others I tried.

Ok, sounds like a good piano, now I'm just worried about the unit itself. As I said earlier, it did have "used" marks. Not sure where they came from, I'll have to call and ask. Otherwise I think I might pick it up!

Anything Korg makes is a decent keyboard. I first played on a Korg back in the 70's when they made synthesizers... They've just gotten better.

If it isn't "too used" that's probably a good buy. I wouldn't get anything that didn't have the full 88 keys, full-sized keys, weighted.

Personally, I'm looking at the Yamaha Clavinova's.

It entirely depends what you want it for. For serious practice, not a chance. For the odd bit of piano playing/accompanist work it's not bad at all.

Yamaha and Kawai do better models as a general rule, but you could do far worse.

Well, I offered them $325 for it, and they accepted. It doesn't claim to be a "do-anything-and-everything" model, and I don't want all that extra junk anyway. At this price, if I wanted more features, I would get less in the way of sound quality and key feel. I'm happy.
