piano man and bars?

i dont go bar hopping.. but i went with some friends to a pretty popular bar.. at closing time, they played that song.. cool song btw. while i was in las vegas, bar inside new york new york was closing and they were playing the song too. what's the significance other than billy joel singing about being a piano player in a bar?

I'm not sure what you mean. If you listen to the lyrics, it's just Billy Joel recalling the days before he caught his big break, and what he was doing to earn some bread.

As for why they always seem to play it at last call, well, I don't know. It fits the mood in a way though, don't it?

At one of the bars in Westwood, they play the Cheers theme song when the lights come on. And a Sinatra song right before it.

Why do they play it? It's a good song that is easy to sing along with. Back in my college days, whenever it was played, everybody usual sang with it. not really any signifigance other than what I stated IMHO.
