In Canada (not sure about elsewhere) we have a Royal Conservatory of Music that does examinations for practical and theory with a given instrument (e.g. piano.)
I'm going to start learning music/piano at the old age of 23.
In about a month I'm going to start practical lessons. I'd like to progress through the usual Grades 1 through 10.
My question(s) are, for those of you who have done this: am I going to be surrounded by little kids at the lower levels?
I know that a 5-year-old with proper training could probably pass Grade 1 practical. Is it necessary to go through the embarrassment of reciting a piece that a bunch of 5-year-olds are playing? What, exactly, do these examinations involve? Can your instructor examine you, or do you have to go to a particular location...?
I do have some beginner-ish musical background. I know basic theory like major and minor scales, rhythms and time signatures, reading music, and so on. I can play the trumpet and piano at a basic level. So I think Grades 1-2-3-ish shouldn't be too difficult for me to progress through relatively quickly.
