PIANO examinations

In Canada (not sure about elsewhere) we have a Royal Conservatory of Music that does examinations for practical and theory with a given instrument (e.g. piano.)

I'm going to start learning music/piano at the old age of 23.

In about a month I'm going to start practical lessons. I'd like to progress through the usual Grades 1 through 10.

My question(s) are, for those of you who have done this: am I going to be surrounded by little kids at the lower levels?

I know that a 5-year-old with proper training could probably pass Grade 1 practical. Is it necessary to go through the embarrassment of reciting a piece that a bunch of 5-year-olds are playing? What, exactly, do these examinations involve? Can your instructor examine you, or do you have to go to a particular location...?

I do have some beginner-ish musical background. I know basic theory like major and minor scales, rhythms and time signatures, reading music, and so on. I can play the trumpet and piano at a basic level. So I think Grades 1-2-3-ish shouldn't be too difficult for me to progress through relatively quickly.

And on a related note (ha-ha, get it? Note?):

What's appropriate dress (for a guy) for a chamber music performance (as in, for the audience, not the performer)?

I started piano as an adult, although not in Canada. Yes, you will be around little kids at the beginning. There will be pictures of bunnies and frogs on the music. Yet, you will live through it.

I was in the fourth year of piano by the end of the first calendar year, so you are right that it passes quickly.

Good luck.

Alright... those bunnies will give me motivation, I'm sure.
