Hi guys, I just dropped a 6850 in my computer and am using it as my primary but windows does not let me open the Nvidia control panel so I am unable to get to my physx. Is there a way to enable it? I've heard of people dedicating cards to physx with a crossfire working... Sorry if this is a repost...

You need NV as primary for PhyX to work...There are people in the forum who know how to crack this though...What O/S are you using?

I cant vouch for it as I've not done it myself.

I was going to then I noticed I didn't have ant hardware accelerated PhysX games :\

Anyway give it a go and report back.

thanks! those drivers are a little old though :/ I'm also worried it won't work with the HD 6xxx series.

I think it would be more of a problem depending on what Nvidia card you're using and what game you're trying to accelerate.

Using 8800GT and trying to accelerate Mafia. I'm gonna have to downgrade my nv drivers though and stuff... Seems like too much of a hassle just for a few games...

I'm using a 8800GT with my 6950 for Mafia as well. Using the 260.63 driver. You don't change to GPU acceleration in the control panel. There is a .bat file that comes with the 1.04ff version that you just click and it switches to GPU acceleration.

I'm using an 9600GT with an HD 6970 for Mafia 2, Batman AA and Cryostasis with nVidia's 260.99 and Catalyst 11.1a and they work like a champ, playable frames at the highest PhysX settings, nVidia control panel works but the PhysX option wouldn't appear, but they work.

The only issue I found out is that with Mafia 2 when APEX is set to high, it runs fine, but never goes above 40fps no matter what, and the 9600GT usage never goes above 20%. Deleting the Cloth folder from the APEX folder boosted the FPS sky high, the game never dips below 100fps even with MLAA and the 9600GT usage increased up to 45% average and everything like debris, explosions and effects looks the same, except for the clothing which doesn't really make a difference at all except in performance, kinda strange, it seems to be a bug or a bottleneck somewhere, the 9600GT is the minimum for playable settings with maxed PhysX.

PS: Playing Batman AA with the highest PhysX effects and no slowdowns whatsoever, love the scarecrow level, impressive. A pity that Batman AA is the only good showcase for PhysX...

Wait so its auto on or did u have to run a bat file to enable it?

I just opened the Hybrid PhysX Mod. exe file as administrator, following the instructions of the file, and presto.

I think you have to use the .bat file to switch between CPU and GPU PhysX. The first time you install it, it will probably be set to GPU PhysX.

Not trying to thread jack but would it be worth it to throw my old 8800GTS 512 in my main pc for physX? I remember reading it was faster than the 8800GT and roughly equal to the 9800GT but I can't recall exactly with all the renaming nVidia did back in the day.

wow! where were you when i asked my physx question? i was wondering how the lower end cards would fair with physx paired with an AMD card. a lot of folks said it would not offer much and i'd be better off with a much better NV card to run them.

Because those folks didn't knew what they're talking about. While nVidia blocked PhysX usage on ATi cards, the hack works like a champ and you can reuse your nVidia card. nVidia doesn't want you to use it because it means lost sales as people would buy AMD cards and reuse their old nVidia card.

you wouldn't have tested it with an 8600GT would you? i have a 9600 and an 8600 at home that have been paper weights. wanted to put 1 in my and wife's pc, but decided against it due to recommendations both would be not worth it.

The 8600GT would be too weak to use it as a PhysX card in games like Mafia 2, Batman AA and Cryostasis. Heck, I compared the results of that card with my AGEIA card, and my PhysX card was faster, it only trailed the 9600GT which is a nice balance between performance and power consumption as a PhysX card. You wouldn't want to use the 8600GT, but the 9600GT will perform great.

When it was launched, it would trail slightly the 8800GT in performance even due it only is half of the 8800GT thanks to its PCI-E ocing and higher GPU clocks and some minor optimizations. You can check out the Anandtech's 9600GT and you will know what I'm talking about.

While I waited for my HD 6970, I played BlackOps on the 9600GT and I was able to max it with 4x FSAA and would never dip below 35fps, considering that my 9600GT doesn't even have a brand (The vendor said Palit but GPU-Z can't even recognize the BIOS string) and runs at 600MHz core. 1.5GHz shader and 1.2GHz RAM which is much lower than stock 9600GT's.

damn man! i'm going to have to steal a friend's old 9600GT so i can use 1 in each machine. i'm running xfire 6970's in my PC with a free pcie, and a single 6970 in my wife's comp.

thanks for the proper info!
