Is it possible to use ATI cards as the primary graphics cards in a system but then use a nVidia card (8800GT etc) as a PhysX card?
Keep in mind, both the ATI and the nVidia card are on the same MB, in the same case.

Can I use an NVIDIA GPU as a PhysX processor and a non-NVIDIA GPU for regular display graphics?
No. There are multiple technical connections between PhysX processing and graphics that require tight collaboration between the two technologies. To deliver a good experience for users, NVIDIA PhysX technology has been fully verified and enabled using only NVIDIA GPUs for graphics.

That's the PR answer from nvidia, but it was working perfectly at one time until they changed their drivers to block using a card for PhysX if the main GPU was not an nvidia card. This was most likely done for marketing reasons not technical reasons.

(I use a 560 ti for gaming, so I'm not saying this as an AMD fanboy.)

a wast of money
This, probably. Although you've already wasted money on 2 580s instead of 570s. How many monitors do you have, and at what resolutions?

Also, necro!

One 580 deals with all the Physx in Batman and Metro. Doesn't need an extra card. Haven't played Alice.
