Purpose:

[*]to study the production of sound waves
[*]to build a device that will produce different sounds
[*]to play a tune of your device
[*]devise a way to make sound from the material
[*]be able to make different sounds with the material

Materials:
[*]any material you can find around your home

Procedure:

[*]device must be able to produce at least 5 different frequencies
[*]you can not use any conventional musical instrument in part or in whole
you must be able to play your device
[*]write a report, complete with diagrams, on how your device works
[*]include these terms in your report:

resonance tone amplitude
timbre frequency wavelength

Has anyone done this project before? I'm completely lost... An instrument made of materials from the household....

basically its asking you to create anything that creates a sound wave.

such as a glass full of water at different heights with wind blowing over it...

a plastic tube in a large bucket of water. At different hights, the tube will resonate differant wavelengths.

Bottles

A bunch of wine bottles filled with different levels of water hanging from a trellis with jute cord. The bottles actually had wine before they were hung. This makes for better timbre! :)

stretch strings/wires of various lengthes to produce different tones. attach to an empty box for amplification. though that may resemble an existing instrument too much..

a pipe that you hit at different lengths?
Edit: actually, don't think that would do it. would need a plunger like Cawchy87 suggested.

seems pretty straight forward. something that you can produce difference notes with, at least 5 (ie. 5 frequencies). be able to play a simple tune.. um, maybe mary had a little lamb or london bridge is falling down. both simple tunes.
The rest, just a matter of explaining the physics behind the music. Need to do a little researching for that. It's simple enough. The way the sound is produces will of course depend on what kind of noise maker you go with.

Or you can use one pipe (prefereably a long one!) and find half a dozen different participants. Have them remove their shoes and strike their feet. Everyone's scream will be different.

I did this last saturday.

I removed the cover of my old 486, bolted a peice of pine to the side, punched a hole in the center and then tied a rope from the hole to a slot in the pine. Pull back on the board to change frequencies.

Sounds weird.

Why do you keep bumping this? How many ideas do you need? People need to stop expecting ATOT to do everyone's HW. A little help is no biggie but not the whole damn assignment.
