I'm sure they'll be usable in the future, but ATM gameplay wise they don't seem to do much.
We had machines we could drive before physics engines, and if it's just for blow stuff up so they look cool, or throwing things around it seems quite simple to me. Couldn't the "gravity gun" easily have worked without a whole engine?

I can see physics playing a bigger role in more complex games, like flight and racing simulators. In most games people play, they just make it cooler. Watching someone get blown out of a window is always neat :D

Why do we need advanced textures and lighting? Environmental sound? Artificial Intelligence?

Immersion.

i'm no expert on this topic but i think
- it feels more realistic
- no need to hard-code complex interactions
- more flexible, maybe the players can do something the developer hadn't though tof

Ok, I was just uner the impression it was going to revolunize the games. It's not that I mind making the games feel better it just didn't do as much as it was hyped to, IMHO. :)

So start doing some roll-your-own maps and make huge use of physics. :)

This is about that PPU (Physics Processing Unit) that was on /. a few weeks ago?
I'm not interested in games, but do alot of newtonian physics otherwise and was wondering if this thing had the fidelity to be used for engineering. Sent em an email but never got a reply :(
