This is a letter that I sent to the American College of Radiology. I believe the text is self explanatory:

To whom it may concern,

My name is Prateek Sahgal. I am a fellow in interventional radiology at the University of Minnesota. I had been contacted several weeks ago by HPS recruiting in order to assist my job search. This is a company that advertises on your website in a fairly prominent position. I am writing to you tonight after a conversation an employee at HPS Recruiting named Chuck Geter. He was trying to sell a job to me, but was not giving the details that I wanted to know. I was explaining to him why I wanted to know these details. Out of nowhere, he called me an ?Indian Son of a Bitch.? I asked him what he said and he replied, ?You heard what I said, you son of a Bitch.?

I asked him what his position was and if I could speak to his manager. He replied that he was the president. I assumed that he was a telemarketer with little education or status within the company. After seeing the ad on your site, I clicked on the link and realized that he was listed as the Vice President of Recruiting at HPS.

While I was writing to you, I just received a phone call from a Troy Cave at ?Med-Gigs?. He stated that he was wondering if I was looking for a job. I saw that the caller ID said ?HPS recruiting? and I asked him what his company?s affiliation was with HPS. He replied that the parent company was changing its name and they were the same entity. I asked if he knew Chuck Geter. I recanted the events of 10 minutes earlier and he stated that I ?probably was an Indian son of a bitch.? I rechecked the website (which prominently displays the names of their management) and noticed that Mr. Cave is the President of HPS recruiting.

I have been in the medical field long enough now to know that I command at least some respect. I did nothing to provoke this type of verbal assault. I believe that this type of behavior should not be condoned at any level within any organization. After seeing their names pictures on the web page, I know that this mentality is deeply rooted in the upper management of this company.

I attended the ACR national meeting in New York City last year as a representative from the A3CR2 organization. I was enthralled with the examples set by the ACR leadership. I sincerely hope that this behavior will not be tolerated by the American College of Radiology. I am asking that at the very least, you eliminate the advertisement from your website. Furthermore, I believe that this company should be banned from soliciting prospective radiologists. I realize that this may not be possible, but any type of action from the ACR may help show that this behavior is not approved of by the ACR.

Thank you for your time,

Prateek Sahgal MD

I received a telephone response from one of the Vice Presidents of the ACR the morning after I sent the letter. The ad has been pulled from their website. I urge any residents or fellows who are looking for a job to carefully explore the personalities of any companies that may be helping them in their job search. I am going to do all in my power to make sure that this group of bigots never makes another dollar from a physician.

Wow, that sounds totally bizarre. It sounds like you handled it the right way though.

Just out of curiousity, what kind of "details" were you asking for when that recruiter went berserk? His reaction sounds so irrational that I can't help but wonder...

This is almost unbeleivable.
I had a pretty low opinion of headhunters to begin with, and now this.

Well written letter.
I would guess that yours was not the first complaint that ACR received if you got a call and the ad was pulled from their website so quickly.
