PHPmyadmin vs. command line

Hello,

I'm new to web development, and I'm putting together my first dynamic web site.

I'm running a current version of Ubuntu and have downloaded and installed a popular LAMP utility called XAMPP for development.

Everything runs fine except when I access the data server from the command line, I can't see the changes I've made through the GUI (PHPmyadmin) and vice versa.

What am I doing wrong?

The system logs me in as the root user by default without a password if that helps any.
