phpbb2 or SMF Forums?

On my web hosting Fantastico can install either of the forums for me. I used a phpbb forum in the past installed by fantastico.

I was looking at the SMF and for some reason the themes and layouts remind me of Anandtech forums.

Or for a relative newbie like myself, is there really that much of a difference once it gets installed?

Thanks.

I'd choose SMF, but then I'm biased. I'm the Admin at TFNN.net and it's based on SMF. Out of the box it requires next to no maintenance. Security updates are automatic in most cases through the admin interface. Mod community is pretty strong and I have found custom mods simple as PHP is pretty easy to get your head around and there are tons of examples out there.

I have an Ubuntu 7.04 VM with it on to mess with settings and test. It's so easy to install, even without fantastico.

Another vote for SMF here... I use it on several forums.

Easy to upkeep and a lot more secure than PHPbb in my opinion.
