i just installed phpBB v2 on my site <plug>(see sig) </plug> and love it - the install was SOOO easy. I'm using mysql with it. It has a lot of configuration options too. Theres a thread on ATOT about forum software, do a serch for it there were a few other free ones.
phpBB is great forum software. It's free, easy to setup, bug free, and if you run into any problems just visit their forums and get all the tech support you need. There are plenty of options in the Admin panel and it makes maintaining the forums easy. There are tons of themes to use to, easy to make it look good with any site. Here is the one I set up:http://www.clan-the.com/phpBB2.
Another free package that I see a lot more of is InvisionBoard. I have never installed this so can't give any useful info, check out the site and I am sure you can see what it is all about: http://www.invisionboard.com/.
