what do levels do?

bightness contrast of indivdual colors, you can chage how the Red, Blues and, Greens look depending on whether or not they're highlights midtones or shadows.

It's called Shadows/Highlights in Photoshop, I use it too when I retouch photographs, gives it a more lively younger look.
