PhotoShop Question

I've got two layers: one is an image, the other is a solid black square of similar size. Both images are right next to each other. Is there a filter that would allow me to sort of blend these two images seemlessly together, almost like a blur effect from one to the other? I'm using PhotoShop 5.0.

layer - add layer mask - reveal all - draw with black arounmd the edge of the mask

How about making the top image 50% transparent and overlap a little?

use the gradiant to transparent.. with a layer mask or somethin i dont remember.. but thats the best way to combine 2 images
