Photoshop PNG Support

I have the oh-so-ancient Photoshop 5.5, and it has lousy PNG support (especially as far as transparency is concerned). Do newer releases have better support?

Also, I know the latest versions have met with some not incredibly favorable reviews. What versions do Photoshop users recommend? Is the latest and greatest worth upgrading to? My 5.5 is fairly sad...

I use Photoshop CS2 at work and I love it. PNG support has been fine in the last few releases that I've used. I guess you just need to make sure that your system has plenty of RAM and a decently fast processor.

I have used PNG support since at least 7.0. It may have been in previous versions, but I remember 5.5 being the incarnation of "Save for Web..." output, which I don't know if it had PNG or not.

So after you have your final PNG image, you find out IE does not properly support partially transparent PNGs. *sigh*

I don't use IE 🙂

Of course, I've only ever used PNG for one website that seemed to use PNG images better for it's sig templates(something to do with a script). I didn't have any issues, was using either Photoshop CS or CS2, not sure.

I found out that Adobe has a 30-day trial one can download of CS2, so I gave it a shot. Wow ... this is so much better than 5.5. FWIW, I'm doing my PNG image editing for a Firefox extension of mine, so IE is no problem. 🙂 It's nice working in a browser that gets that kind of stuff right...
