Photoshop n00b

Please, someone tell me just how to insert an image onto a layer, cannot work it out. Thx

To insert an image from an external file? Typically i just goto File > Open and copy what ever image it is you want to insert, then go back to your original photoshop file and create a new layer - and paste the contents of the clipboard. Otherwise, i believe you can just do a File > Place on a new layer

Yeah, I usually use teh CTRL whatever functions but they, err, didnt work;-) Thx fellas.
