Warning: Noobish question ahead. I've used neither of these programs.

Say, I was just wondering if someone could tell me what the differance is between Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator? I know Illustrator is a vector drawing program, but other than that I don't understand the differance. Let's say I was designing a graphic navigation page to use as a index for a homepage, which would I use? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I would use Photoshop for that, but that's just because I'm more familiar with it (not to mention that I don't have Illustrator). It really depends on what kind of stuff you plan to do; if you're going to be using lots of photographic images and stuff in your site, then Photoshop is undoubtedly the way to go. But for a more "flat" layout that could be better represented by vector graphics, Illustrator would probably be better.

photoshop is the standard that web designers use. it has great features for slicing up the page into all the necessary little gifs, and you can use layers to make the rollovers colors different etc., (just change layers and re-"save for web" with the same slices to output all the rollover graphics)

Illustrator is mostly used for things that have to scale up or down like logos or print stuff - generally not the case with web pages, especially navigation menus

Illustrator is also really great for, um, illustrations. much nicer than painter or photoshop, I think, because of the scaling, and the fact that every mark you make remains a separate object that can be manipulated.
