photoshop : how do i make a paticular color in the picture transparent

i am using ver 5. how do i make a a particular color in a picture transparent, so i can copy it and paste it on to another picture.

if you notice on the layer window (upper right side), you'll see opacity and a drop down menu for the certain % you want.

i dont want ot make the entire layer transparent...just a particular color.

Select -> Color Range

Then use the dropper to select the color.

Wow. I have the color selected. Woohoo. What then? Does the opacity tool work in this case then for the color only?

then click on copy ....only those regions that dont have the color are selected. now you can pasted every thing except the color you selected on a new layer
