Photoshop CS4 64-bit Windows Only

So much for Leopard being "the first mainstream OS to completely and seamlessly support both 64-bit and 32-bit applications"...

Wasn't there another thread a few days ago that totally disproved that claim?

64 bit for photoshop isn't really that big a deal, especially on windows.
Cs3 already supports 4GB of memory when run on 64bit windows , x64 or vista
Its compiled with the LargeAddressAware flag.

I've honestly never run out of memory for photoshop and I use some pretty large images.
8192x8192 24 bit color, 8 bit alpha

'Bout time.

If they'd make Illustrator, Premiere and FrameMaker 64-bit, my life would be basically complete. But this is a good step ahead.

The man has a point there.

from what I've read it's about 10% faster than the 32 bit version, some of the larger images I work with in PS, it's a slow process. I'd love to see a 10% speed boost.

Yeh 10-12% supposedly, although this could be publicised as lower than it really is as to soften the effect of a Non 64-bit for OSX until CS5 when they transition it from Carbon to Cocoa.

My concern is will I have to update all my plugins to 64bit for them to work in cs4 64-bit.

Thats the way it is with 3d apps.
Can't use 32 bit plugins with 64 bit version of program.

If I have to update my plugins, they can forget this person changing to it.

True, if the plugins are dynamically loaded into the main processes' address space then they'll need to be 64-bit as well. But if they're separate executables, scripts, etc then they should work fine but that's not likely. Well maybe someone will make a nspluginwrapper equivalent for old photoshop plugins. =)

heck people sometimes have problems with plugins when going to a new version of PS. 32 to 64 bit will probably be a huge PITA for us with plugins. I only have a couple but one of them cost me 100 bucks - and I'm CHEAP so that was a lot of moola. I'm still running PS 8.0 (cs1?) no money or need for CS3, but CS4 will probably screw things up nicely.

I for one welcome it. I work on images that can be up to 72000x50400 or larger and I have a need to work on three or four sets of 36000x25200 images composed of multiple layers of different images.

I hit memory walls left, right, top, bottom, and sideways. I have to have dozens of GB of scratch space free if I'm going to get any work done. Give me 32GB of memory and the ability for Photoshop to use it and I could fly through work.

72000x50400 images?!?! I thought my images were good sized, holy crap I couldn't imagine how long it takes you to edit those suckers. I get impacient waiting for a 5000x5000 image lol. Those images must be HUGE size wise, extra memory would a god send to you once the files are open.

Yes. Yes they are. Fortunately they're they're not super-dense. The other 36x25 images are, and I have to make masks for them and everything. On top of that I usually have huge datasets open in other programs. I can murder a computer.

This is a perfect example of why we need 64-bit computing STAT. I can't even imagine how much disk thrashing you go through. Do you use WD Raptors at least? [***EDIT***] I checked out your systems. Man, you need to build a system like mine at the very least. but then, without 64-bit Photoshop... but still, you have a lot of headroom for improvement. Vista 64 is your only option. I actually like it a lot.

Well, I do this stuff at work. I've got a similar system at work, except it has three monitors. They aren't big fans of giving us powerful computers at work. "Good enough" is the mantra. I had to fight to get the systems we have now.

That's another story though. 😀

I know, I'm stuck with a crummy HP P4 single-core and a crappy mobo with integrated graphics (if you can call it that) that doesn't even have a PCI-E slot! Talk about Stone Age. XP runs like crap on this thing. Good thing I get to telecommute a lot of the time.

Our computers are acceptable, I suppose. We hit the network pretty hard too, which causes problems. I'm glad that big apps are moving to 64-bit. It's time to phase 32-bit out.

it is time to phase out 32 bit I agree, gotta love how MS is still going to make a 32 bit version of Windows 7. At least Apple took the plunge and went the 64 bit route. I might have to switch to Vista 64 if CS4 is good 🙂
