Photoshop BMP error?

When I try to open a BMP file in Photoshop 6, it says:

"Could not open C:/xyz.bmp because the file format module cannot parse the file."

I've never gotten this before, anyone know how to fix it? TIA

does it open up in windows paint? then you could just copy/paste into photoshop
