nota : i know iam getting you crazy with my questions, i post this one for a friend.

I work with Photoshop, After Effects, 3DS Max, Premiere, director, flash, illustrator etc.
I've buy a P4 1.7Ghz with a Intel mobo i850 with 512mb of RDIMM pc800. Do you think its a good system for that kind of work ?
Do you think an Athlon can be better ?

A Athlon would be stronger with photoshop unless you find a sse2 filter that you would use.

<< Wait for the Palo's - They'll have SSE2 built in :) >>

Not SSE2, only SSE.

I'd say the Athlon is generally better at Photoshop, 3DS Max, Premiere. The others I'm not sure. The Palomino core (new Athlon) would probably be the best choice, it's coming out at 1.53 GHZ in a few weeks...

It depends on what you do the most. If you're mostly doing 3d stuff than get the Athlon. If you're gonna be encoding alot of video the P4 will shine with the right (SSE2 enhanced) software. In Photoshop they're basically equally fast except for the odd SSE2 filter. I'd personally go with an Athlon cause they're strong in all areas basically whereas the P4 is really good at some things but also pathetically slow for some things (considering it' s high MHz).

I agree with Bangsalaio. My dad has three Dual G4's at work he uses with photoshop and stuff like that, and they are awesome. But money will be a factor.

The best option for graphic programs is to have a Mac system. Get into a good ad agency or a design company and you'll only see Macs. If he prefers to stay with the PC platform, an Athlon would perform better, notably in 3D Studio. If he wants to boost some more performance I recommend him to have a partition with something like 10gigs to use as a swap drive.
