They can't do too much. That much VTEC in one area is like a ticking timebomb.

Yup, all that variable timing actually creates a time vortex through which an everyman can get sucked into all kinds of periods of American history, where he temporarily inhabits the bodies of regular people and tries to help them get through rough situations while being guided by a guy from the future who is always cracking jokes. There was a TV show based on just this situation. They named it after what happens when a Honda engine goes past 4,000 RPM, although as you mentioned, it actually takes a half-dozen or so Honda engines to create this effect.
