haha.. yeah, but I cant get a digicam to do what I would like for less than $2500

I can get a good slr for $200 which is much more inline with my budget.

SLR's are sooooooooooooooooo 1970's...

Sure, and guess what kind of cameras took the majority of magazine covers, calendars, newspapers, publications? SLR's (either medium format or 35mm). Its big in sports, wildlife, travel, photojournalism, etc..

True..but he said he's a beginner, and now with some of the new dslr's (canon d60, nikon d100) coming out at around $2K that maybe changing soon.

I would think a beginning photographer would be better off nowadays with a good digital (not necessarily a dslr, maybe a canon g2, sony f707, etc), because the way to get better at photography is to TAKE PICTURES....lots and lots....learn what each parameter does, learn composition, learn lighting, and so on, experiment.

After the large purchase price of digital...it's free! no film to buy, no developing charges (only pay for the ones you print)! that encourages the user to take more shots...and also you get immediate feedback...was the exposure right? what settings work best for this shot, what should I change right here and now to improve the shot.

if you are a 'beginner' what do you mean when you say 'I cant get a digicam to do what I would like'. examples?

(I'm not saying digital is better than film, but it shouldn't be eliminated from your search right away..)

The main things I am concerned about is the abilty to have interchangeable parts. ie: lenses... Though I am aware of the capabilities that digital is coming out with, the hefty price tag is what is keeping me away from it at this time...

Perhaps when I said I am a beginner, I should have specified that I do know some stuff about photography, just have never taken any formal classes, or studied anything. So perhaps novice might be a better term? I basically want to further develop skills and techniques and at this point would prefer a SLR. Perhaps in a few years as DSLR's become more affordable, I will get one. The nice thing about a 35mm SLR is that 10 years from now, it wont be "out of date".

Oh, and did I mention I am a student? Thus the cost of nice digicams is a little out of my reach :(

Oh well, someday...

Thanks for all the info guys, some of these sites seem pretty useful.
