I love collateral duties. I have to get a couple of digital SLR cameras for work and I know nothing about photography. What are some good digital SLR's in the $2-3k range? They will mainly be used for wide angle and telephoto outdoor shooting.

Nikon D1 series, we have one of them here and it's nice.

Canon makes some too, the model numbers elude me at the moment.

Does the 2-3k include lenses or is that just for the body? Some DSLRs are 3k for the body alone.

Do you have any lenses from existing 35mm cams? That's what influenced our decision to go with a D1 at my old job. We already had a ton of Nikkor lenses which the D1 accepts.

We do have existing cameras. Bear with me, I don't know anything about this stuff. I pulled some out of the vehicle kits and they are Nikons. I have three F3 SLR's and an F100 SLR. Thier are also what look like wide angle and telephoto lenses for these suckers. the telephotos are huge.

If you have existing nikon lenses, you'll probably want to stick with the D1 series then. You'll be able to use all the budget for the dslr and get a higher megapixel count camera.

Dollar for Dollar, the new canon is the best deal, I believe it is caled the d10. For the life of me I can't understand nikon v. canon fan boys. They both make nice cameras, and every six months when new tech comes out one is slightly ahead of the other. For now it is canon. And FYI - canon glass is also cheaper.

I guess it's comparative. My old nikon 35mm slr has a viewfinder that just gives you about 5x the accuracy of the d1. If you use auto-focus this isn't a biggie, but if you're shooting portraits wide open, you need a bit more precision to get tack-sharp catchlights.

b/c all DSLR's have a crop factor (except the Canon 1DS which is 8k & 11mp). When you look through the viewfinder, you are only seeing part of the image the lens can resolve, hence a smaller and dimmer image which is harder to use in Manual focus. Some of the various crop factors I know are...
Canon 10D --1.6
Canon 1D --1.3
Nikon D100 --1.5

Incidentally, you also have to multiply the focal length by this factor to get the effective focal length. This makes them great for Tele shooter and poor for WA shooter.

Get the Canon ones, because all EOS lenses are interchange with Canon film/digital SLR & some Canon video cameras. Anohter thing is that Canon USM lens are the fastest auto focusing lens that money can by, that why Nikon license the horseshoes motor design from Canon (the first generation of the Canon autofocusing motor not the second or faster & quieter third gen). Not to mention the awesome ISM & L lenses.

All Nikor lenses can be mount on to Nikon newer bodies (Canon & others can be done through the us of adapter), however you will lose automatic focus & maybe auto epxosure with some lenses.

Take the lenses to the local pro camera store and ask them to see what is the best choice for your situation, and see if it is possible to ultilizes exsiting equipment.

Canon glass is cheaper, because Canon own most patents to it camera technolgy, while Nikon have to purchase many licenses from their competitors.

Since you already have Nikon lenses just get the D100. It has a 1.5x sensor crop, but Nikon is coming out with wide angle lenses designed around this. Nikon is about to announce their D2H, and their existing cameras might drop in price when they do.
