There is currently an awesome lightning storm that is lighting up the sky ever 1-2 seconds. I've got a Powershot S1 and have never tried to capture lightning. What is the best way to do it? Is there a burst mode that will just keep taking pic after pic until I tell it to stop or the mem card runs out of space? Any info, and hurry I don't want to miss it!

Not going to get the same effect you would with a film camera.... dunno if that cam is even fast enough to capture it with any precision, might just be luck.

Put it on a tripod set it for an exposure of 5-30 secsa whatever your camera allows, the longer the better

and then pray for lightning to strike while its open

Ok so if it's luck, can't I just set it to burst and hope I get some? I can't find burst mode on it!

Ok, will do exposure.

If you have a "B" or "Bulb" setting, you can set the exposure as long as you want you just have to hold down the shutter release button.

I can't figure out how to set the exposure and they're starting to get less frequent so I think I'm out of luck. I did figure out how to do the burst shots though, and that worked out ok (took about 3 shots a second) and will see if any of those came out.

Like anubis said.
forget burst mode.
set to long time exposure (15+ sec if possible).
use timer or cable release.
point your camera to the area that got hit the most.
Then pray !

this be the way.

I just looked, your camera is not capable of bulb mode/extended exposure.. which is why I said you'll just need some luck.

Get a film SLR, way better anyway 😛

Bah, didn't end up getting any streaks, just a few ones that look like it's daylight out, so I put them up. What the hell, my camera sucks. 😛 photos

Yeah I've got a tripod but it wasn't worth it busting it out for just burst shots. I could see if I had an extended exposure but oh well.

Why do people here want me dead? Geesh, high wind warnings of 70+ mph and nickel size hail(sp?)

with that camera all you have to do is swtich the dial on top to the "Tv". then set the time. it can do up to 15 seconds i belive.

Beast1284... haven't seen that name in a long time. Or maybe I should come here more often.

I had about a year long sabbatical. I'm back and better than ever. 😀
