I am going to be doing some portrait work and such in my house for friends. what color and material should i use for a backdrop? i will be doing color and black and white, but all digital. i would like to be able to have shadows, but also be able to do without them. i was thinking of something i could make into a curtain and hang when i need it. maybe have a few different ones.

Get what is called a muslin....white if you want shadows, black if you dont. Also you will need studio lighting....I would say two hot lights and quarter light the subject from both sides. Being how you are going to be doing the work in the first place, I expect you to know what quarter lighting is.
