Photography as a job?

alfa147x

I love photography and i have my own (cheap-o) equipment:
XTI
Tripod
2 batteries
2x 2gb cf cards
canon 28-90mm 4.0 - 5.6 lens
Quantaray 75 - 300 4.0 - 5.6 lens
^ thats the gist of what I use

I was wondering can I some how find a job that relates to my hobby?
any ideas would be great.

Thanks!

You could:

Find an area photographer to apprentice under, like a wedding photographer who doesn't mind having a really cheap sidekick to help him cover the angles and to do some grunt work.

Work for a local newspaper or magazine.

Go to a local school or college and see if they have any work. Sometimes universities have their own photo department, which means you can borrow their lenses and bodies.

For really serious work you're going to have to build up a portfolio showcasing excellent work. I'm guessing you don't have this, so obviously you're probably not going to get a job shooting for something like an advertising agency right off the bat. Well, not as a primary shooter anyway.

I endorse all of Fuzzy's suggestions and would add a few.

You can eventually use some entrepreneurial spirit and drive. You can earn your way and build a reputation by doing your photo work for local agencies on a volunteer basis - that can establish your skill and value, and also start you building a network.

There are often weekly regional newspapers and pubs that use a lot of photography. They don't pay much. If you can combine writing with your pictures, you are way ahead when you can provide a complete illustrated story of local interest.

And learn all you can about photography - enroll in local community college courses. Credentials help on a resume.
