Went out today in search of Velvia 50 since there's only one store out here nearby that stocks it. I wander in and happen to see that they have the value of values when it comes to Zeiss lenses and they have it for $175, which is $75-$100 less than it has been going for on eBay...

So I am now the proud owner of a Zeiss APO Vario-Sonnar 28-70/3.5-4 T*.

This will be a great walk-around lens. I've got a 24mm F2.5 if I need the extra F-stop or want a slightly wider view with that last extra bit of sharpness, and a 50/1.7 T* when it absolutely needs to be razor-sharp, but the little APO Vario-Sonnar should be the perfect all-arounder. Can't wait for sunset tonight to see what it can do. 🙂

OK then.

It's actually pretty light, Zeiss designed it as a walk-around lens and the case is actually composite instead of metal. Those who have used it haven't had any issues with durability and it certainly doesn't feel any less solid than my other Zeiss, just lighter.

M42? Zeiss hasn't made a screwmount in ages. They're still good lenses, but I don't think that you can get any of the T* (aka multi-coated) Zeiss glass in M42. I could be wrong though since I only play with the Contax/Yashica mount.

that lens is pretty decent, but the tamron 28-75 is a lot better. its only 339 w/ a MIR and is f/2.8 over the whole range. it is also tamrons SP series and outperforms the canon w/ IS equivalent in that focal range. that may have been out of your price range, though.
