I did this panorama (six stiched photos) of the Earth's shadow this evening from Mars Hill, Flagstaff, AZ. This is about 15 minutes after sunset. Looking roughly E-NE, you can see the clear contrast between the Earth's shadow (grayish-blue) and the higher regions where there's still some light (made reddish by the Earth's atmosphere). Eventually the shadow will climb higher and higher, covering the whole sky and making it night :)

Many thanks to spankyOO7 and compudog who agreed to host the image!

Earth's Shadow

Huh? I think you need to put the pipe down. It is not the Earth's shadow that makes it night. That's impossible, since we're already on the Earth.... lol

I can't really tell from the pic, but I guess he means the shadow on the clouds and stuff. Soem of the sky is dark.

Yeah... I understand what he's saying, and you can definately see it.. You can also see it well in visable satellite loops. Load one up, and you'll see the sunlight disappear across the United States from East to West... It's pretty trippy.

I just thought explaining it as the Earth's shadow was kind of dumb.. It doesen't take much intelligence to understand the concept of a shadow. :p

?!?!

No we aren't. We're on the Earth. The Earth is not inbetween the sun and.. the Earth, creating a shadow(night).

I can't believe I'm arguing about this. You people either need to go to bed, or wake up. :p

Are you really that dumb? At the night the earth is very obviously between your body and the sun.

Notfred may have proven that he is a tool... but not a complete tool. :D

I realize this. It just sounded really stupid to me for some reason. ;) Like he was saying the Earth eclipses itself, lol...

The earth is us and the sun at night. We are not part of the earth (which can be arguable) but we are things on the earth. So the earth can project its shadow onto us... because we are separate objects.

<edit>

ahh.. I see the miscommunication, when I said 'we' I meant PEOPLE.. not the earth

I didn't know I'll raise such a hornets nest :) It IS the Earth's shadow, since after sunset we're living in it - as TuxDave pointed out. The sky on this picture is completely clear, so there are no clouds, etc. But we can still see the shadow since there is dust (and air :)) in the Earth's atmosphere, which scatter the light. Now, if you were on the Moon, you can't see anything like this, because there is no air, so no scattered light. The pinkish glow above the shadow is the scattered light from the layers of atmosphere higher and further to the west. Far enough to the east there is almost no light penetrating the atmosphere and we see the shadow there.

I'm sorry for the small picture, Yahoo doesn't allow viewing of the full-sized image unless I subscribe for premium services. You can download it, it's 900x128, about 42K. And I'll try to host the full picture on a friends web site. If anyone wants the really full image, PM me, it's 3576x512, 430K.

Edit: Forget downloading, Yahoo still gives you the reduced-sized image. Bummer.

When I read the thread title, I thought you somehow had a picture of the earth's shadow as it exists in space...

Actually.. think about it. The earth is making a shadow on us just like we make a shadow on the earth during the day.

That would be neat, JC, but we need to fill the space around Earth (say, 500,000 miles around it :)) with dust so you can see the shadow :) It would be the opposite effect of a flashlight in a dusty room.

You're nuts!!! Everyone knows the earth is flat. We would have to be on the other side of the plane to be in the shadow! and if that were true, we'd all be upside down!!!
