Photo management software - with tags networkable

At work we are trying to make the stored photos easier to find.

The photos are stored on a network drive.

Currently all machines have XP pro and users only have access to Windows image viewer.

If we use Windows Photo Gallery will edits and tags be visible no matter what user tries to search the photos on the network drive?

Are there better options for storing/sharing photos in a company?

I believe both Picasa and WLPG store the tags in the files' metadata/headers....so long as they're a supported type (jpeg, tiff, png. Not RAW formats). If each machine's "library" is pointed to the same network share location, they should all have the same searchable information.

How big of a company/network are we talking here? If it's small I think Picasa or WLPG could be sufficient. If it's substantial, then investing in a proper Digital Asset Management system might be worth the money.

We are approximately 20 employees with "own computer", who have access to the photos...

you can get codecs for WLPG for alot of RAW's

Yeah, but I've noticed they're really hit or miss with regards to being able to support tagging. And few of the camera manufacturers have released x64 codecs for some ridiculous reason.

...it's certainly worth a shot, but I wouldn't rely on it.
