Photo Editing Monitor Suggestions

Greetings,

I am looking for suggestions for a new monitor. My current monitor, a
Samsung 971P attached to a PC with Win XP, began to flicker last week
and this weekend went black. After checking cable, video card, etc it
looks like the monitor has died and I need a replacement.

My main use for this monitor is photo editing using Photoshop and Lightroom. I do most of the printing for my wife and I on a HP9180 and
profile both the monitor and the printer using a Spyder3. We have been
able to get good reproduction of what we saw on the screen to print the
way we saw it on the Samsung monitor.

I have looked at the suggestions in the first part of the thread and have looked over the recommendations. While I can spend the price of the smaller NEC models recommended if I have to, it would be nice if we
could get something in the $400-500 price range.

I would like to have a monitor with at least a 12 inch (300mm) vertical
height. This gives me the room I like to have to look at our pictures.
I have been happy with the 4:3 ratio but would be willing to go to a
wider monitor as long as I have the vertical height.

While this is not a critical application like for commercial pre-press, I do want accurate color representation. I usually edit in ProPhoto RGB or Adobe RGB color spaces. For certain types of pictures will also edit in Lab (this does get me in trouble occasionally as the printer can not handle the Lab color range - that's how I learn what not to do). We also shoot in infrared and so good gray scale reproduction is also important.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks,

knapph

Let me the first one to welcome you to this forum...I am digital artist I never thought about which monitor to work with photos I use CRT monitor for many years until it died I went out to best buy to try LCD with reasonable price I dont care much about fancy stuff..I know Samsung is far supperior and many people like Dell LCD monitor but I bought MAG monitor I cant remember the model number it is in the storage right now I am using notebook. This 22 in wide screen MAG LCD monitor does a good job for me so far....I know nobody really like MAG LCD monitor for photo editing.
You should look for either Samsung or Dell LCD monitor....22 inches wide screen gives me more room with Photoshop workspace. Dont worry about response time cuz you dont plan to play game right?
Also the displayport is coming out so HDMI/DVI might be dead soon so depends on what graphic card you have.
I think that is all I hope I didnt miss anything.

Get a PVA or IPS panel. Do not get a TN panel.

Difficult to get something decent in your price range. I'd look at a few HPs. The LP2275w and LP2465w are both PVA monitors. (I have the latter.) You can also get the LP2475w which is an IPS panel.

Any of the above should be decent.

Whatever you decide to get I would definitely check the panel type over at TFT Central... http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/

edit: I forgot to mention that between PVA and IPS the latter is the better choice. Unfortunately IPS panels are typically much more expensive.

I absolutely love the one I have - it's a Sampsung 2333SW, 23"

Screen Size: 23" wide
Resolution: 1920 x 1080
Brightness: 300 cd/m
Contrast Ratio: DC 20000:1 (1000:1)

Brilliant, crisp graphics... I've got one for sale, too; well below market (link in sig)

Dell is having a sale on its professional 24" LCD, the 2408WFP, for $431 shipped (not including tax yet)
check it out here: http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=1361583

At this price, I would definitely get this monitor for your needs. You will not regret it. Whatever you do, stay away from ALL TN-based monitor. (Usually, you can tell something is a TN-based if it's 24" and well under $300).

Say whut? That's a regular TN-panel, isn't it? Coz if it isn't, I'm going to pick one up 2morrow, it's 'only' 170 euro's in Holland.

Yes, it's TN. And see my update. The price is much better at Newegg. :D

I didn't know if the OP would want it, but if it meets his needs (or yours), at that price, it's a hell of a deal.

I'm a big fan of Samsung monitors and TV's.
