Phoning into a LAN

I have a phone lan with three Windows98SE computers and a number of Klinux RC5 nodes. They are connected with a 10/100 switch. All works fine and the three Win machines use ICS to connect to the Internet through a dial-up modem (USR).

There are a few avid Quake 3 fans in the house and they would like to bring in a fourth player by the modem.

In an attempt to achieve this, I have installed dial up server on the machine with the modem. It accepts calls and connects OK using IP 192.168.55.1 and assigning 192.168.55.2 to the calling machine. The connection is stable.

The machines do not appear in the other's Network Neighbourhood. Client for Microsoft Networks is installed on both machines. They can ping each other quite happily. The dialling in machine cannot join a Quake local network game (the server is on the machine with the modem) and it cannot be joined by specifying the IP in the setup on the dialling in machine.

Interestingly enough, the two machines joined by modem can play "Hearts" with no difficulty.

I don't want to use the Internet for the game as there would be a bandwidth choke with three machines using ICS to use the one dial up connection. I figure it must be possible to have a dial in machine join as part of a lan. I just can't figure out how. Any help appreciated. Thanks 🙂
