Hi Guys,

I am about to pick me new work phone. I can choose between:

Apple iPhone 5 32GB
Samsung Galaxy S3
Sony Xperia S
Nokia Lumia 920
LG Nexus 4

But which? First thoughts:

I don't like iOS, so I will probably rule out iPhone5.
Sony Xperia S seems like an obselete phone, compared to the others.
I already have a Samsung Galaxy 2, and really like it. I especially like the fact that my contacts are automatically synced with my Gmail account.

On the other hand, Microsoft Office in the Lumia is a big advantage. Hmm.

My must have apps:

Gmail
An exchange client
Dropbox
A guitar tuner
Kindle
A PDF reader
Spotify
A calender which can sync with both Exchange and Gmail
Google+
A metronome
A VNc client

Thoughts?

How come you cannot get the Xperia T/TL? It is a newer version of the S. Also, I've heard the Lumias are very heavy. IMHO, I would go with the Xperia T/TL (if you can get it) or the GS3. Of those two I'm partial to the Xperia since it will strain your eyes less...

GS3 sounds like your best bet. Plus it really is a gorgeous phone(I own one myself)

I'm interested in what you pick. I'm somewhat in the same boat. I have an iphone 4s, that I'm sick of and want to get a larger screen. I've pretty much narrowed it down to the nexus 4 vs Lumia 920. Decisions, decisions....

Honestly if you are coming from an Iphone you will not be happy with the 920 unless camera is your top priority. You will not be happy with the missing apps and little touches of IOS. I am a huge WP fan but can admit the app situation as of now is not very good. Also there are little things the OS needs to be worked on. I am hopeful those will be fixed in time. I am still getting a 920 but not a big app user and really love live tiles. For the wife she loves to take pictures with her phone all the time and would like to do some short videos. The 920 is a no brainer for her.

That's basically what I'm trying to decide on. Do I want a WP, b/c it's different or b/c it's better? I have an Android tab so I think I'll see the benefit of having two platforms that are similar. The big upside to WP is that it will double as my work phone so having an office app would be sweet. Plus I have a 360 and I have no doubt that MSFT will be heavily incorporating games & some airplay like software w/ the 360 and WP. Plus the Nexus 4 doesn't have LTE. Ahh I hate technology!

There are plenty of apps on Android that will let you view and edit office documents. But, on a such a small device, do you honestly plan to do much document editing? Cause you might as well get a laptop then.

The SGS3 and the lumia would probably be your best choices. The Nexus 4 is a non starter cause of stock androids poor exchange support.

Best bet is what I did. Upgrade to an iPhone 5. Sell it. Buy a GS3, and pocket the profits.

Does the GS3 have amazing Exchange support or something? I'd say the iPhone has better Exchange support IMO compared to Android. I like the UI more at least. However I do like using Touchdown on Android (costs $$$$$) because it has oodles of features. Unfortunately, the UI looks like ass and is more suited for Android 2.x. They need to give it a facelift already.

Don't know why people flocked to the GS3 so soon given the N4's power.

Given that you have a SGS2 and are happy with that I'd go with the SGS3. Its like an S2 but better in every way.

I dont really see any advantage of having office on a phone and if you dont like iOS then it would be silly to get an iPhone.

What's wrong with stock android's exchange support? It seemed to work fine on my nexus 7.

Is this a phone for work? If so, WP8 is the way to go. If it's for personal use, I'd like the GS3 or the Nexus 4.

Whys that then?

Exchange integration. We had some 920 pre-release units around the office and I was impressed. We have a couple of Surface RTs making their rounds now too. We did some side by side using Exchange email and calendar sync with some iPads, and the iOS side was often slow to update.

Subjectively, the WP8 UI is pretty nice to me, too. I like the way tiles work, and I like the integration of various services and the flow between related items.

I think all the OS's support exchange sync for mail and calenders.

Just because iOS was a bit slow in that instance doesn't mean there's a general problem with it.

Its for both work and private use.

And yes, Microsoft Office is a big selling point for the Lumia.

Do you care about an SD card slot?

Only weakness on Android is exchange mail, really. You get no threading mode.

If you're a guitar player, an sd-card slot is a great bonus. Android is coming along with multi track recording, which eats up a lot of storage. It's awesome to have that power in your pocket when you're inspired.

The Lumia 920 is a solid phone. I previously wouldn't have recommended a Windows Phone because the hardware honestly sucked, but the Lumia 920 is a top notch phone. Software on the other hand could definitely use some improvements (though I could say that about any OS really, they all have issues), but software can be improved over the air for free, hardware cannot.

If it were me, I'd get the Lumia 920. I personally hate skinned Android and strongly prefer a uniform look and feel to an OS. You may be a bit bummed by the app situation, but I think the apps will come. With 100,000 apps but only 4% marketshare, either developers just like writing apps for the platform or they know something we don't.

As for me, I'm an app developer so I've owned a ton of phones, listed below.

1) Apple: iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S, and 5
2) HTC: HD7, One X (awesome screen)
3) LG: Nexus 4 (ordered)
4) Motorola: OG Droid, Droid 2 Global
5) Nokia: Lumia 900 (bleh screen, bleh camera), Lumia 920 (awesome screen, great low light camera performance)
5) Samsung: Galaxy S, Nexus S, Focus, Galaxy Nexus LTE (terrible battery life), Galaxy Nexus GSM, Galaxy S III (terrible skin)

But I'd say that the Lumia 920 is a strong choice and I can see Microsoft really making strides and it's clear that 2013 will be even bigger. I think Apple has sat on it's laurels since iOS 4. iCloud is a bust in iOS 5 and Maps has a spotty train wreck in iOS 6. As for Android, after owning so many Android phones, the ONLY Android phone I will ever buy or fully recommend is a Nexus. Period. So tired of skins.
