I am looking at getting a new mid-range smartphone but I want something that will continue to get updates for a reasonable period of time. As far as I know, that means iPhones and the Nexus phones. Are there any other brands of phones that get regular updates?

Official updates? I'd recommend the Moto G 3rd gen, assuming you are on T-Mobile/att.

Unofficial updates(eg cm Roms?). More choices, but less stable

Do note that you might miss out on certain carriers specific features, like WiFi calling and volte.

Google/Apple/microsoft has only pushed WiFi calling and volte for nexus 6/iPhone 6/6+/some lumia phones, no other phones have cross-carrier volte working

iPhone 5s? Should be supported for another 2-3 years, has Touch ID and has dropped in price.

Otherwise the new moto g is a good choice.

Moto G 3rd gen FTW

Remember to pay the extra $40 for 2GB RAM/16GB, we love ours.

My Moto Droid Maxx has updated twice - last one about a month ago.

It's gotta be a nexus, moto g or moto x for quick updates. I'll never buy a different phone then the ones listed aboveb
