phone tools fax doesn't work

when i first bought the dell piii 900 mhz, the phone software seemed to work. haven't used it in at least 6 months. now it doesn't seem to pick up.

one thing i noticed is that the phone/fax software is on com3, but the active com is 1. how can this be? how do i change it. i recall doing manual com installation years ago, but now i'm at a loss on this. i need this fax software to work in the next few days so all suggestions welcome. thanks much. the program name is phone tools and it came pre-installed on the dell.


 
i'm now on com3. note that i also am running a dsl modem, so i'm not certain if that could be part of the problem. currently i can neither send nor receive. it doesn't even seem to dial.
 
update: i couldn't get this to work so i downloaded the faxamatic. it installed without a hitch and i can now send and receive faxes. still don't know what happened to the phone tools.
