A few months ago I switched to Quest at 4.9 cents per minute. Last night someone from AT&T called wanting me to switch to their phone service. Here is how the conversation went.

AT&T: Good evening, this is AT&T, would you be interested in saving some money on your long distance phone bill?
Me: Certainly
AT&T: We guarantee our rates and if you simply answer "Yes", we can get you switched over to our low, low, rates.
Me: What exactly are your rates?
AT&T: We charge only 7 cents per minute.
Me: Do you have a monthly service charge?
AT&T: Yes, $4.95 per month.
Me: Well, I use a company called Quest, which charges me 4.9 cents a minute, with no monthly service charge.
AT&T: But we guarantee our rates. Can we change you over?
Me: Excuse me, but why would I want to change over to AT&T, when the only thing I can see that you are guaranteeing is a higher rate?
AT&T: We would still like to have your business. Can we change you over?

Like talking to a robot!

That is the time to start throwing offers at THEM! "Uh yes, I might be interested if you could send me a check for $50 to get me to come over." You switch over for a month, cash the check, then call Qwest up again. For some reason, the big companies keep coming back with another check (I have probably cleared over US$250 from AT&T and MCI when they were fighting for my business). Maybe it ain't like that anymore.

I might look into Qwest if they serve my area...beats my MCI plan's 4.95/mo bit too.

Hate those monthly service charges. Hate phone companies.
Hate telemarketers.

Hmm, what does that say?

MCI sent me a 50 GC for Blockbuster if would switch over. The same day I got a free 60 min. phone card from AT & T becasue I am such a good customer. I wish they woulg go back to sending out the check also! Is there any incentive for going to Qwest, besides it is cheaper?

AT&T clled me once, asked who my LD provider was and how much I paid. When I told them Quest and the rates, they acknowledged that the cant beat Quest. The telemarketer simply said thanks for the time and hung up.
