Phone tapping

Over the last few days my wife and I have been noticing a "click" occasionally during calls. I have not heard this up until a few days ago. Is it possible that someone might be tapping my phone? I'm on a wireless phone in my house when this happens.

Next question. Is it legal to tap my phone without my knowledge? Can private companies, like insurance companies or private investigators do this without my knowledge?

The reason I suspect a phone tap is that I'm involved in a personal accident case and my lawyer just notified the insurance company of our case two weeks ago.

Advice?

even if they did have a warrant, they wouldn't tell you they are tapping your phone. wouldn't that defeat the purpose?

I have a feeling that's probably closer to the truth. Has anyone ever heard of insurance companies doing this or is it only the police/FBI who can do it?

You would think that after 100 years of phone tapping they would have come up with a device that doesn't click. In fact, if your phone is being tapped you actually get a better sound because they end up filtering out the clicks. You were being tapped before, but they are no longer doing it since you now have a lawyer involved.

(1) Your phone is not tapped and you are just paranoid.

(2) Now that is out of the way, lets move on. Just pretend it IS tapped. Every conversation, boost your side of the case so that all the info they collect HELPS you. Make it an inside joke with the people you are talking to on the phone. Enjoy this status and have a ball.

Legally only the government should be able to tap your phone I believe and at that they would need a warrant. I would think that if your phones actually were tapped you wouldnt hear any clicks because that would give it away to people that actually have their phones tapped. Call up the phone company and complain about these clicks and see what they say. If your that paranoid you could just use a cell phone cause Im not sure if they can tap that and the same goes for VOIP.

do you live in an apartment or townhouse? It might be a neighbor leeching your line. They're picking up to see if it's in use.

Just start calling random numbers in the Middle East throwing in the words "Allah," "Osama," and "Jihad." You'll know if your phone's tapped soon enough. :D

thanks to the "homeland security" act, no warrant is needed to tap your phone.

it is shocking how many people in this thread apparently do not realize that thanks to our current president and his erosion of our personal freedoms, the govt does not need a warrant to tap your phone. /P&N

That's probably because this thread has absolutely nothing to do with government wire tapping.

VOIP is pretty easily tapped as well. Nothing that Ethereal can't pick up and decode. :)
