Hey guys Im here in the US on vacation and my phone was stolen from my bag during my flight from Denver to Orange County airport. I carry the phone always in my cabin luggage and this time was no exception but however after seeing that the flight was full, I decided to gate check the bag as my assigned seat was in the end of the aircraft. After landing in OC and going home, 12 hours later I realise my phone is missing. The phone's battery(out of charge) was dead when I put it in the luggage. The phone is question is a Samsung Note II and has my home country roaming sim. I dont know if there is a find my iphone kinda app installed on the phone but I've never used or registered one. I've had the phone for only 3 days before my trip began and android is new to me. I've called my mobile service provider and have got the sim blocked. Now what I would like to know is what is the best way to proceed ? Should I complain to the airline(Frontier airlines) or Orange County airport police? If I do will I asked to be prove ownership of the phone at the time of the complaint or when the phone is recovered? I know the chances of recovering it is very slim but I dont want it to go unreported. I leave the US next week and have cousins LA but I'm not sure that if its found also if they can take the phone on my behalf. Worst case if I cant do anything, I atleast want to report it to AT&T, T mobile and the other GSM networks that my phone was stolen.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Notify the airline that the phone was missing from gate checked baggage.
Notify your phone service carrier.

Good Luck.

How long from when the flight landed until you discovered that the phone was missing?

Isn't there a find your phone app?

Phone was dead upon departure per OP

Thanks for your help. About 18 hours.
That makes it more difficult for tracing for the airline.

I suspect that that is the first area to concentrate on - it was within their care/control.
By being gate checked; the number of people that had access is greatly reduced;(4-5) people may have handled it if you picked it up at the gate vs baggage.

The bag was picked at baggage claim. I thought gate checked bags usually are collected at baggage claim conveyers? Are they usually given back when exiting the aircraft at the gate?

Hmm this made me realize, now that I have a smart phone, I probably should look at setting up some kind of remote kill and locate. Basically act as a beacon, but at the same time erase all information from it. Of course I'd have to make sure it will auto connect to free access wifi networks and I'd have to hope the person passes by one before they start to go through it.

Before you forget I would install Prey Project on your laptop and smart phone.
