phone spam

My brother is getting spam on his new ATT phone from a Yahoo dating service via text messages, or emails. Apparently the previous owner of the number had it setup to send notifications to that phone number, and never turned it off. So when my brother got that number, they just started pouring in.

This has caused over $200 in additional charges in the last two month's bills.

Is there a way to stop the spam, and is it possible to get ATT to give a credit or reimbursement for the spam costs?

You can fight back.

Pay particular attention to para. 4 - get on the Do Not Call registry. It helps.
