Phone number changed, iPad 2 seemed sick, reload system, now brain hurts.

My phone number that was registered with Apple has not worked for months. Lately my ipad2 seemed sick, like its operating system was compromised. So two days ago I restored the operating system and tried to connect to Apple to download anything Apple or I might have saved before the restore. Because my old phone number no longer exists I can't get a text with a verification code. The iPad now works much better but I can't figure out how to connect with Apple. Googling has not been successful. I know this must be a simple fix. Do I need to just call Apple to get things straightened out?
